Michael’s initiation into the disability community came at the age of seven, after undergoing a hip-disarticulation amputation to stem the progression of an aggressive Ewing’s sarcoma. Beginning in his formative years, he learned to navigate a world that would constantly challenge his determination. 

In 1981, Michael, with the aid and assistance provided by the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, started his career in the Orthotic & Prosthetic profession where he was employed continuously for over forty-two years. He began his career in a technical capacity; after receiving further training and education he moved into a clinical role, becoming a nationally Certified and state Licensed Orthotist-Prosthetist. In 1998, he opened his own clinical practice, merging it to form a corporate practice in 2007. He left clinical practice in 2010 and taught at the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology in the Orthotic & Prosthetic Technologies Program, spending fourteen years in higher education. He is a retired faculty member from the Oklahoma State University system. Michael was inducted into the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists as a Fellow of the Academy in 2016.

Michael has a Prosthetic Technician Certificate from the Northeast Metro Technical College in White Bear Lake, Minnesota; a Journeyman’s Certificate in Prosthetics from the New York State Department of Labor; an A.S. degree in Individual Studies from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York; an Orthotist-Prosthetist Assistants Certificate from the Pittsburgh Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; a B.S. degree in Career & Technology Education from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma; and a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching from the Oklahoma State University Graduate College in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
